The Pediatric Emergency Department is designed to provide an engaging, safe environment that eases potentially traumatic experiences for young patients. Tucked among existing hospital structures, the 28,000 SF building’s ‘emergency red’ panels serve as recognizable focal point for arriving patients and families.
Inside the sheltered drop-off zone, a double-height atrium accented by wood and warm colors welcomes visitors. Small, light-filled gathering areas with comfortable furnishings adjacent to the atrium contribute to the restful atmosphere. Overlooking a healing garden and offering indoor play space, the Kid’s Club provides refuge and distraction for patients and their families.
Within the clinical core, a central care team zone co-locates physicians, nurses and mid-level providers close to patient care areas, facilitating collaboration and reducing travel distance. Glass partitions allow visual connections while maintaining acoustical privacy. Bright graphics in treatment and exam rooms introduce the energy of the outdoors to these typically stressful places and underscore an enhanced awareness of the potential of nature to contribute to healing.
