Zaha Hadid Wins New National Stadium Japan Competition

On November 16 it was announced that Zaha Hadid Architects is the winner of the two-round, international design competition for the New National Stadium Japan in Tokyo. Second prize was given to Cox Architects of Australia and third prize to Japan's SANAA + Nikken Sekkei. The project will "reconstruct" the stadium that was built for the 1964 Olympics, in anticipation of the 2019 Rugby World Cup and Tokyo's bid for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The stadium is to sit 80,000 spectators for sporting, concerts, and other events under an operable roof. Per the announcement, Hadid "has proposed an innovative and fluid design that expresses a sense of dynamism appropriate for sporting activities." Her win comes in a month that has also seen the opening of Galaxy Soho in Beijing and the Broad Art Museum in Michigan.
