A vertical expansion to a 1904, two-story shingled cottage was designed to enlarge and modernize the house for a growing family while preserving the intimacy and funky character of the original construction.
The triple-wide, hillside lot and expansive views provided a unique setting for a city property. Working within the existing footprint preserved the site's extensive open space and the protected garden areas while maximizing construction and material efficiency. The variegated FSC-certified cedar siding recalls the pattern of the historic interior paneling while also integrating with the modern aluminum, steel and glass details at the exterior. Inside, reclaimed wood, wool, ceramic, and stone form a natural and tactile material palette. The addition's symbiosis with the existing building resulted in a modern vernacular architecture that celebrates the remarkable qualities of this singular urban environment.
