Right after the successful opening of the newly designed employees terrace of Breuninger´s flagship store in Stuttgart, DIA – Dittel Architekten started redesigning the 770 m² Breuninger canteen ‘Casino’. The client wanted to have the terrace and the casino merge into a single unit. The materials, colours and forms of the clean and timeless terrace can be found in the interior again and give the areas a holistic appearance.
The various seating arrangements allow the employees to enjoy their breaks any way they like. The lively canteen life can be observed from one of the 27 solid wood tables. Those who like a little bit more peace and quiet can withdraw to the bar that spans more than 6 m, sit down at the banquet along the facade overlooking the terrace or sit in the cosy lounge. The latter offers MAC stations offering free Internet access to employees.
The design centres on clear forms. Warm materials like wood contrast with white concrete and surfaces. When designing the canteen, particular importance was placed on an original environment. The sails suspended from the ceiling are one highlight that not only serves as an eye-catcher, but also as a sound absorber to meet the standards of pleasant acoustics.
A suspended garden with integrated lighting makes the bar stand out. The deliberate use of plants creates a pleasant atmosphere.
The employees can breathe fresh air, take in the sun and recharge their batteries on the adjacent terrace, which was expanded to measure about 360 m². It offers a variety of seating options: lounge islands, modern concrete benches and bar stools with a view over the city. The sunshades developed by Dittel Architekten and their asymmetrical arrangements fit into the concrete tables and the overall appearance.
