Bornheimer Depot, located in the heart of the popular Bornheim district of Frankfurt, is an old tram depot that was taken out of service in 2003. Over the following years the depot and the brownfield sites around it were transformed by three architectural practices into an urban district with mixed residential and office space, shops and restaurants. All that remained from the previous development were one listed building, the old tram depot and a late 19th-century house. A key component in the new ensemble was designed by Stefan Forster Architekten: four townhouses with clinker-clad bases and light-coloured rendered façades that blend into the context. Loggias link these buildings to the newly developed square. At the back the apartments open up to the quiet, green inner courtyard via balconies. This development, the “largest inner-city passive house project in Germany” won the 2011 Green Building Award of the City of Frankfurt, and special recognition in the Deutscher Städtebaupreis (German Urban Development Award).
