With its motif of a simple form resembling a pier, this project symbolizing the town of Onagawa’s long connection with the sea is intended to serve as a crossroads of hope and nostalgia. The red brick pavers engraved with the names of various people and extending toward the sea are a metaphor for life. They cross over a slanted white strip that bisects the terrace, symbolizing the tsunami that devastated the community in 2011 and the moment when time stopped, but then began once again, facing toward the sea as do the red bricks. Anchors and boat propellers left behind by the tsunami watch over the people who are setting sail toward the future, still devoted to their community.
