In Morschen, Hesse, Störmer Murphy and Partners restructured the area surrounding the 800-year-old former Haydau Monastery and complemented the cultural monument consisting of the monastery, the cloister garden and a park with a four-star conference hotel providing 136 guestrooms and a restaurant. The new threestorey building, a 120-metre long wing, was positioned next to the monastery church and rises on top of the historic remains of the old abbey wall which freely runs through the building. The elongated building with relief brickwork façade marks the site boundary towards the village and puts the monastery church at the heart of the ensemble. The thus created new church square serves as entrance area for the hotel, the restaurant, the cloister garden, and the church – a place of arrival and departure, where hotel guests, restaurant and church visitors come together. Spa, bar and restaurant are located on the ground floor with direct contact to the church courtyard and the park, whereas all rooms and suites are accommodated on the upper levels.
