Primary School and Kindergarten in Zuoz - Picchio

A new primary school and kindergarten in the heart of Zuoz sets a new reference point for collective spaces in the alpine village. The building blends seamlessly into the context and at the same time recognises the responsibility and importance of the primary school as a public building.
The existing topography is utilised, with a mineral sand concrete wall forming the original shell of the building. A generous series of public terraces welcomes the new building and negotiates its relationship with the site. The result is an architecture that is firmly connected to the site and seamlessly integrated, while developing and communicating independent and clear values.
Within this, a filigree interior world of timber construction manages the internal division of the school, which is programmatically divided into three floors. Its grid-like character defines the structure of the rooms and at the same time allows for versatile and flexible organisation.
The reinterpretation of Engadine construction methods in a new scale of the building tacitly seeks three-dimensional relationships with its context.
