The reconstruction scheme for Precious Seed, a community in the Oworonshoki neighborhood that was heavily affected by the brutal demolitions by the state and the local king, is characterized by its simple, affordable, and modular design at all scales.

We developed a one-room house with veranda, vertical farming elements and our already tried and tested MDDT (Mobile Dry Diversion Toilet, see respective projec). The houses can be combined to larger units, depending on the availability of funding and the size of the plots.

The key element is the large roof that provides protection from sun and rain in all-year hot and humid Lagos. Combined, the roofs and stoops create a graduated yet flowing space between private and public, trying to make the most of all the limitations, including poverty and tiny plot sizes.

One house can be built for roughly 900 US$, MDDT is about 200 US$, and the vertical farming mesh costs 20 US$.

Next steps in 2024 include the establishment of a strong and cohesive women's group striving to develop and implement a strategic plan to rebuild the community based on the guidelines developed in the Oworonshoki Local Building Code Project (see respective project on website) and the reconstruction scheme.

At first, we aim to build a prototype of one house, using it for capacity building purposes how to build as a woman. Incrementally, as the women's group is more established and funds can be organized, the community should incrementally be reconstructed.
