"CMF Trend Lab 2023"
Design changes the future of life
We are in an era where design is everywhere.

Design can create comfortable beauty. Design can create comfortable beauty from the smallest pieces of delicate materials to spaces that can accommodate people.

Design can be the key to the future, improve the environment, convey the mood of a space, and even relieve anxiety and solve problems. Design can create intangible value for the industry and humanity.

"CMF Trend Lab 2023" is a platform with a vision and height that goes beyond design itself. This exhibition brings together excellent design and designers, and allows design to promote technological progress and social development.

The four curatorial units of "CMF Trend Lab 2023" are "Digital Existentialism Lab", "Poetry In Vicinity Lab", "Emotional Show Lab" and "It Bonding Lab".

Against the backdrop of major events, the soul of the entire society needs repair and reconstruction. Poetry is a highly condensed style of writing, with a rational spirit and a position of critical reflection, and it is also a posture that requires us to review and re-understand society and ourselves in response to the great influence of the times. At the same time, the concept of sustainability has attracted public attention and reached a key moment for action.

In "Poetry In Vicinity Lab", curator Gang Xu will present works that attempt to respond to our environment by dividing the content into three sections: "Poetry", "Remake" and "Tiny Things".

『EMARF COLOR THINGS EXHIBITION』
東京都, Japan

This exhibition will be held to commemorate the release of colored MDF, which will be available at EMARF, a store known for digital fabrication. I named the work I will be exhibiting [TWINS-MDF]. It has been more than 18 years since I first designed [TWINS]. I was amazed that iron could be laser cut exactly according to the CAD drawing I had drawn, and I aimed to create a design that made use of that characteristic. The first [TWINS], made of stainless steel, is a twin-like stacking chair, as the name suggests. Taking advantage of the precision of laser cutting, the details fit perfectly, so you can sit on two chairs stacked together (https://yuji-tanabe.com/twins-chair/). And this [TWINS-MDF] is also a twin-like chair. By devising a way to cut the wood from a 4x8 board of colored MDF, I was able to cut out the material for four chairs (two of which are for stuffed animals) without any waste (it was like searching for the greatest common denominator of the production range, board thickness, and four chairs). The Frame Chair, which is mainly made of a frame, and the Surface Chair, which is mainly made of a surface, are in the same space, creating a relationship like that of an empty shell and a mass.

Please come to the exhibition venue to see their presence and details.

●[TWINS-MDF]
TWINS-MDF has increased the yield rate** to over 70% by devising the wood cutting* of the twin-like Frame Chair and Surface Chair. For example, the back part of the Surface Chair is cut from the inside of the back part of the Frame Chair from a 4x8 board (1219x2438mm) of colored MDF. For this reason, we have repeatedly considered the production range, drill width, and position interference of the joints. Furthermore, the unevenness on the top of each chair allows them to be connected horizontally like a bench.

*Wood cutting is the process of cutting lumber from logs while considering how to cut the lumber.

**Yield rate is the ratio of the amount of lumber actually obtained to the amount of logs. The higher the number, the less waste.

Architect's Chair Exhibition 2021
Okayama, Tokyo, Osaka, Japan

Architect's Chair Exhibition 2021.
The exhibition is sponsored by Maniwa city, Okayama Pref., where forestry is well developed.
Manufacturing of chairs from solid cedar and cypress.
A chair is a special piece of furniture, it's something that people touch, and it has different levels of important aspects such as feel, structural reliability and compatibility with the space in which it is placed.
Therefore, many architects have challenged the task of creating chairs and created many masterpieces.
In this exhibition, 8 groups of contemporary Japanese architects present the timber of Japan.
Chairs are made from cedar and cypress from Maniwa city, which are rarely used to make furniture. Maniwa boasts one of the largest timber production volumes in Japan.
