A five-hour blaze hit the 1,600-seat auditorium of the 1989 cultural center.
For the second time in as many weeks, a building-related disaster has occurred in Brazil. A couple days after the November 27 crane collapse at a World Cup stadium in São Paulo fire swept through the nearby 1989 cultural center designed by Oscar Niemeyer for five hours. Sparked by a short circuit in the 1,600-seat auditorium, the fire spread enough to reportedly damage 90% of the building's interior, which held Niemeyer's original drawings for the building.
