The Architects Newspaper takes a look at the installation of a 135,000-square-foot (12,500-sm) green roof atop the SHoP Architects-designed arena that opened in Brooklyn in 2012.
A green roof was part of SHoP's original arena design, which anchors the Pacific Park Brooklyn project, formerly known as Atlantic Yards. At the time of the arena's completion, the roof was a white surface with the Barclays Center logo, the green roof having been value engineered out of the project. The green roof took a step toward becoming a reality in 2014 when Shanghai-based Greenland Group Corporation joined Forest City Ratner on the Pacific Park project. Construction of the green roof started in April 2015, and progress on it can be seen via the unofficial Atlantic Yards webcam.
The four-minute film from The Architects Newspaper highlights the installation of the sedum roof, while also discussing the new roof structure needed for the installation and other concerns and considerations that come with such a sizable green roof.
