hanrahanMeyers architects (hMa) founded by Victoria Meyers and Thomas Hanrahan, incorporates h = horizon line and Ma = space, as a new paradigm for twenty-first century architecture. Both principals are licensed architects and have been in practice together since 1985. ‘The Four States of Architecture’, hMa’s monograph published in 2002 with Wiley and Sons, describes hMa’s philosophy of design based on the natural world. hMa has developed a body of built work that uses natural phenomena: light, sound, and elemental pieces of nature such as raw steel, stone, and wood, to build a phenomenological architecture that projects its users into contemporary readings of architecture, space, and nature. The office has produced various projects that explore light in particular, including Schrom Television Studios, Arts International, Queens Museum of Art, and Red Hook Center for the Arts.

hMa is known for their residential design. The firm was included in the 1999 Un-Private House exhibition at MoMA, and was selected to design a house for the ‘Houses at Sagaponac.’ hMa has won numerous awards for residential design, including a 2006 Honor Award from the Wood Design and Building Council of North America, for ‘Ash 4 Ways,’ a residence in New York City.

In 2006 hMa published Designing with Light with Laurence King (U.K.) and Abbeville Press (U.S.).
