Jensen Architects collaborated with team leader West 8 on this winning competition entry for Fort Mason Center and the Golden Gate National Parks. The design proposal preserves the site’s utilitarian military identity while activating the water’s edge, improving pedestrian access and parking, and enlivening spaces for expanded public programming and arts. Waterside improvements include wooden decks, floating pontoons and bridges that weave the site together. Pier One is reinvented as a publicly accessible, art-oriented hotel featuring a large-scale exhibition gallery, restaurant and cocktail lounge, and day spa all with stunning views of San Francisco Bay. The unique hybrid program promises to be both a destination for visitors and a valued amenity for locals.
