HOUSE P.

conversion, Gloggnitz, 1999

Originally the house was an out-building of the palatial Villa Kranz, built around 1908 by Oskar Strnad. The roof was made of glass and used äs a greenhouse for the cultivation of plants. Already before 1920 the glass was replaced by metal sheeting extending to the terrace banister. During reconstruction a wing was added on the east and west side and the whole building was adapted as a home. The roof was given a delicate steel structure with narrow rhythms to create an Impression of lightness and to establish a link to the former glasshouse. Light screen walls and Skylights on the upper floor accentuate continuity with the roof, as well as the transparency and the openness of the interior. In the north, a gallery was added in the high-ceilinged passageway.
