It is the renovation design of Yisabu Dokdo Memorial Park located in Samcheok City, the capital of Kangwon-Do, South Korea. Liu Haowei described the concept of the project as "a cloud lingering in the mountains". This symbol with oriental charm and symbolic significance has become the source of design inspiration.
CAA takes the most historic Yisabu Dokdo Memorial Museum as the starting point of "wandering in the clouds", extends towards both ends, surrounds the whole park, forms a strip continuous air corridor in the air, and connects the museum, art and Culture Village, residence and hotel into a whole. The four functional buildings are independent and interrelated. A complete organic architectural form integrates the three functional areas of Kim Isabu Memorial Hall, Dokdo experience center and the tourist center, making the whole building form a strong contrast and interesting symbiosis with the surrounding environment in urban evolution.
The continuous skywalk integrates the whole memorial park into a completely independent building group, creating a platform for infinite dialogue between human and nature, connecting them like a link between ups and downs, and completely integrating into nature. When walking in parallel space at different heights on the skywalk, people can experience the charm of mountains from multiple angles.
There are no walking escalators throughout the three-story hall. Instead, there are ramps around it. The continuous ramp deconstructs the interior space from the senses into a rich hierarchy, but still maintains a complete and continuous linear space. The design of the ramp not only skillfully integrate the content of the exhibition with the dynamic line of the viewer's behavior, but also closely fits the concept of "cloud", so that visitors can walk like in the clouds or flowing water in the museum, bringing people to the cloud from vision to experience. The exits at both ends of the 2nd floor of the museum naturally lead people to the outdoor gallery bridge.
On the other side of the cloud skywalk are the resort hotel and culture & art village, which are also the exhibition area of the city's history and culture. Independent residential houses scattered at the foot of the Mountain have also been included in the project, becoming the main body of the cultural & art village. Through the replanning, the enclosed space, which was originally intended only for local residents, was opened up into an open shared space integrating artist studios, creative homestays and a community of residents.
The project continues CAA founder Mr. Liu Haowei's design thinking of "future parallel city" and draws new inspiration from oriental traditional culture. Wandering in the Cloud starts from tradition, explores the future, breaks the confinement of the original physical space, expands the spatial dimension upward, creates an extraordinary spatial experience, and enables the dialogue and integration of history and the future in a new dimension.
