The Michael Van Valkenburgh-designed park, which occupies former industrial land and piers overlooking Lower Manhattan, is unique among New York City green spaces in that it is under a mandate to be financially self-sustaining. This situation has forced BBP to set aside certain parcels to developers, two of which are under construction adjacent to Pier 1 with residences and a hotel. At the park's southern entrance, by Pier 6 and the already completed One Brooklyn Bridge Park (the conversion of a former warehouse building), are two parcels that the BBP has solicited proposals for residential buildings. Some nearby residents are suing over the inclusion of affordable housing in the development. Nevertheless a scheme should be selected by the end of the year with an anticipated start of construction next year.

Below are images of the 14 proposals. Full presentations can be found on the BBP site in the RFP Responses Design Presentation (PDF link).
