Ulrich Franzen was born in Dusseldorf, Germany, in 1921, moved to the United States as a child and eventually graduated from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design with an architecture degree. Franzen worked with I.M. Pei before starting his own office, where he embraced Brutalism and created some lasting icons that were loved and hated in equal parts. These include the Alley Theatre in Houston, Hunter College's campus in Manhattan, and his own house in upstate New York. Franzen died on October 6 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he had retired with his wife.
