Always modern! Berlin and its streets.

The Architects’ and Engineers’ Association of Berlin-Brandenburg (AIV) celebrates its 200th anniversary by presenting the urgent topic of Berlin and its Streets. The namesake show in Buenos Aires opened on October 7 at the ArtHaus as part of the 19th Bienal Internacional de Arquitectura de Buenos Aires. It showcases ten urban projects by some of Berlin’s leading architects—Tchoban Voss Architekten, Hilmer Sattler Architekten Ahlers Albrecht Gesellschaft von Architekten, LANGHOF, GRAFT Gesellschaft von Architekten, Kleihues + Kleihues Gesellschaft von Architekten, Axthelm Rolvien, Patzschke Planungsgesellschaft, MÄCKLER ARCHITEKTEN, and Bernd Albers Gesellschaft von Architekten together with ENS Architekten. In addition to the featured projects, the show represents the original ongoing open-air exhibition (September 5 to November 30, 2024) along Unter den Linden in the heart of Berlin. The show promotes the necessary public discussion about what kind of city we and future generations want for the future. The “Great Streets of Today” section of the exhibition uses selected main streets, each representing an era of the last 200 years, to show how these urban spaces came to be. In the second part, “Great Streets for Tomorrow,” the invited architects and engineers show how ten currently inhospitable streetscapes—two in Berlin and eight in Potsdam—could be transformed to make them livable in the future. With this initiative, the AIV calls for a debate on moving away from the idea and practice of a car-friendly city in a dialog between politics, administration, civil society, science, and business.
