While we missed Quintessenz's Kagkatikas Secret installation last year when it was part of the Paxos Contemporary Art Project on the Greek island of Paxos, we're thankful to materialPREIS for bringing the colorful intervention in a 400-year-old ruin to our attention.
Kagkatikas Secret is one of twelve winners from 178 submissions to materialPREIS 2019, which were given out last week in a ceremony in Stuttgart. The annual awards are given by raumPROBE to architects and designers who are using materials in special ways.
Quintessenz's project won one of three awards in the material usage category. In Kagkatikas Secret, glass-fiber fabric was painted in 120 different shades of color, the overlapping layers creating noticeable moiré patterns. The sizes and arrangement of the suspended fabric panels drew visitors to the windows at the far end of the ruin and the distant views from them.
