Located on a small parcel of land in the city of Zürich, this multifamily house mediates between the various building heights of the existing urban context. Since the site was originally intended to be an open green space for the adjacent housing development, the new building was conceived as a garden pavilion. The cubist form with a porous stucco facade and large window openings oscillates between structure and mass. Deep frames with sliding shutters shift and transform the proportions of the facade openings, adding dynamic to the structure. Metal panels, perforated with an abstract floral pattern, provide sun protection while controlling views into and out of the living spaces. The building volume encompasses six living units –
a 5-bedroom unit with garden access on the ground floor, two 1-bedroom units with loggias on the first floor and two 3-bedroom duplex units with roof terraces on the top floors. A 9-foot high atelier studio space is integrated into the slope of the site.
