American Academy of Arts and Letters' Architecture Awards

The American Academy of Arts and Letters has announced the five recipients of its 2014 architecture award winners. The Academy has given awards to architects since 1955, the inaugural year of the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize, which is given to a "a preeminent architect from any country who has made a significant contribution to architecture as an art." In 1991, the Academy added awards to honor American architects "whose work is characterized by a strong personal direction." The Academy created another category in 2003 to honor an American "from any field who has contributed to ideas in architecture through any medium of expression."

Two Arts and Letters Awards in Architecture (American architects): Annabelle Selldorf and Taryn Christoff & Martin Finio

Two Arts and Letters Awards in Architecture (Americans in any field): Michael Blackwood and Cynthia Davidson

Academy members selected a pool of 39 candidates, from which the five winners were chosen by a committee: Henry N. Cobb, Elizabeth Diller, Michael Graves, Hugh Hardy, Steven Holl, Richard Meier (Chairman), Cesar Pelli, James Polshek, Robert A. M. Stern, Billie Tsien, and Tod William. The awards will be given at a ceremony in May, followed by an exhibition in the Academy's Manhattan galleries.
